Off-duty EMT, nurses save man with CPR

They sprang to action when he went into cardiac arrest on the Virginia Beach boardwalk

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — An off-duty EMT and two nurses sprang to action when a 65-year-old man went into cardiac arrest on the Virginia Beach boardwalk on Friday.

“I turned around and heard all the commotion, and I saw a man down with his wife in panic,” EMT Derek Fuller told WTKR.

He, along with two nurses nearby, performed CPR until EMS arrived. He was awake and talking by the time he left in an ambulance.

“I just couldn’t believe it was happening,” said nurse Thomas Fielder. “It feels good to do something like that.”

They said they were just doing what they had been trained to do.

“It’s good to know that we were able to help someone in their time of need,” Fuller said, “as well as getting the message out that anyone can help someone if you’re willing to, and CPR does save lives.”
