RALEIGH, N.C. — Since January 2009 Wake County EMS has been supplementing its EMS delivery model with advanced practice paramedics (APP).
The Wake County EMS APP program has three objectives:
- Reduce the occurrence of, or minimize, medical crises for persons with specific medical conditions known to benefit from close medical monitoring.
- Redirect care for people with mental health or substance abuse crises at facilities other than the emergency room when no other medical emergency exists.
- Ensure that an additional experienced paramedic is available on critical level calls by responding alongside paramedic ambulances.
