COTTLEVILLE, Mo. — When a young girl began choking on an ice cream cone, her older brother came to her aid using lessons learned from a Lifesaver CPR class he’d taken just a few weeks before.

The Prater family was in the car returning from an outing Aug. 6 when a piece of waffle cone became lodged in 9-year-old Camden’s airway.

Panicked, their mom immediately pulled over to the side of the road.

Kyle, 12, passed his ice cream cone to her and said, “I got this!” After performing a few abdominal thrusts, he managed to clear the obstruction.

Though she was understandably upset, the girl was fine thanks to her brother’s quick thinking.

Kyle credits his skills to an afternoon he’d spent taking a free CPR class hosted by the St. Charles County Ambulance District Outreach paramedics, which included a lesson on how to relieve choking using the Heimlich maneuver.

While the free 20-minute course does not provide a certification card, Kyle and Camden’s remarkable story shows the training is still effective.

According to KSDK News, Kyle will be receive a commendation from the ambulance district, and he’s also been asked him to serve as an honorary Heimlich instructor at one of their upcoming classes.
