GILA BEND, Ariz. — A Gila Bend Fire Rescue paramedic is recovering after the cab of the fire engine he was working on unexpectedly fell on him, trapping him underneath the apparatus.

Gila Bend Fire Chief Arelia Henry said firefighters on duty quickly gained access to Paramedic Cody Jordan, pulled him out, and began life-saving measures, ABC15 reported.

Jordan was flown to a level 1 trauma center in critical condition.

“It has been very touch and go all the way since the beginning,” Gila Bend Fire Chief Arelia Henry told FOX10. “We are a very close fire-family, and it has been tough.”

Henry said Jordan has undergone surgery to stabilize his chest, which was fractured in multiple places, and is expected to undergo more surgeries in the future.

The Gila Bend Fire Department and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident.
