AUSTIN, Tx. — Tougher restrictions on sex offenders could be coming from state lawmakers. On Thursday, the Senate Health and Human Services Committee considered banning sex offenders from becoming emergency medical technicians and paramedics.
Under current law, the state licenses EMTs on a case-by-case basis and, in some cases, can approve licenses for people that have been convicted of serious crimes in the past. Sen. Jane Nelson of Flower Mound filed Senate Bill 492 , which she hopes will become law across the state.
As of noon Thursday, no action has been taken on the bill. If the bill becomes law, the new restrictions would start Sept. 1, 2009.
