LAKE CARMEL, N.Y. — Funeral services will be held Friday after a volunteer firefighter-EMT died from cancer last weekend.

Charles “Chuck” Flickinger, 56, also served as a nurse and was well-known throughout his community.

Flickinger, a former Marine, participated in the response and relief effort during Hurricane Katrina, the Sept. 11 attacks and went to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, reported the Journal News.

“Always the friend to call on when you needed a hand, an ear, a shoulder, a tool or an odd job done. Chuck was relied on by many,” his obituary said.

He leaves behind his wife and siblings.
