Family: Man died because cardiac hospital closed ER

A cash-strapped Calif. hospital specializing in heart health stopped its emergency ambulance services, and family members say Booker Williams died because paramedics couldn’t bring him there

SAN PABLO, Calif. — A grieving California family says it lost a loved one because a cash-strapped hospital refused to accept patients arriving by ambulance.

San Pablo’s Doctors Medical Center stopped its emergency ambulance service earlier this month in a desperate move to recover from an $18 million budget deficit.

That decision was a fatal one, one family claimed: Booker Williams died from cardiac arrest at another hospital because paramedics wouldn’t take him to Doctors Medical Center, which specializes in heart health.
