BRAINTREE, Mass. — A woman who just completed EMT training gave birth at her home with the help of her potential future colleagues.
Patriot Ledger reported that Yunyi Chen’s first baby was delivered on her living room floor by Brewster Ambulance paramedics, along with firefighters and police officers.
“I realized we weren’t going to make it to the hospital,” paramedic Johnathon Bobbitt-Miller said. “Then I realized we weren’t even going to make it to the ambulance. At that stage things can happen very quickly.”
Bobbit-Miller said Chen was more familiar with childbirth than the average first-time mother, and was unusually calm. He added that it wasn’t until she was at the hospital that she revealed she had just completed EMT training.
She told him that she was eventually planning on applying for a job at Brewster Ambulance and that she would have rather met her potential colleagues under different circumstances.
Bobbitt-Miller, a 19-year veteran paramedic, said the delivery was at least the 10th for him.
“There is no better joy than to bring a life into this world and to hand it to the mother,” he said.
