OAK FLATS, Australia — A paramedic battling cancer in Australia was surprised on national television with a $10,000 check.
The Illawarra Mercury reported Oak Flats paramedic Paul Norwell, a 13-year vetearn, was diagnosed with a tumor in one of his kidneys and recently learned the cancer had spread to his shoulder, lungs and stomach.
Norwell was nominated by 30 of his colleagues for the Today Show’s “Knock of Cash” promotion. More than 100 paramedics and hospital nurses gathered to support Norwell.
Norwell said he has been overwhelmed by the attention and that his diagnosis has been hard to handle.
“You’ve just gotta roll with the punches and see how you go,” Norwell said. “We’ll get through it.”
Kevin Milne, Norwell’s friend and colleague, said the idea to nominate him quickly took off.
“We are a close-knit community,” Milne said. “We put the word out to our ambulance family and said let’s show our support, our friendship, our mateship to Paul. Everyone met in their uniforms to show Paul and his family that we are here for him. They are going to go through tough times but we wanted to show them we will help in any way we can.”
