UK paramedic ‘assaulted’ patient in ambulance

Woman was being taken to hospital after passing out in a pub

DEVON, England — A paramedic sexually assaulted a woman while she was being taken to hospital after passing out in a pub, a jury heard yesterday.

Robert Steadman allegedly touched the 33-year-old’s groin repeatedly as she lay on a stretcher. He was seen by ambulance driver Shelley Cornish in the rear view mirror, the court heard.

Prosecutor David Sapiecha told Exeter crown court: “This defendant sexually assaulted a lady. She was in his care at a time when she was extremely vulnerable.

“The driver was shocked and re-checked at various times what was going on.”

The alleged victim was being taken from Bideford to Barnstaple, Devon, last February.

The jury heard she was “more or less unconscious” and remembered nothing.

Steadman told police he had innocently touched her to stop her moving around.

The 44-year-old, from Bideford, denies sexual assault. The trial continues.
