HUDDERSFIELD, England — Ambulance chiefs have called on drinkers to stop wasting their time.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust has highlighted the excessive call outs to booze-related incidents as part of alcohol awareness week.

Keith Prior, director of A&E operations, said: “Individuals who are under the influence are more likely to take risks which may lead to accidents and, unfortunately, the seriousness of any illness or injury they may sustain is likely to be greater than if they were sober.

“On Friday and Saturday nights, staff in our 999 communications centres see a noticeable increase in the number of people calling for ambulance assistance where alcohol is believed to have been a factor.

“What some people may not stop to consider is that, when ambulance crews are caught up dealing with alcohol-related incidents which could have been avoided, it can delay them from reaching someone with a more serious life-threatening condition such as a heart attack.

“We don’t want people to stop enjoying themselves but our valuable resources are there for the people who really need us so we are reminding people to drink responsibly to protect themselves and others.”
