DETROIT — Paramedics tending to crash victims became victims themselves. It happened on the Lodge Freeway near the Outer Drive exit just before 4:00 a.m. Saturday.

58-year-old Mike Kotulak and his partner were on duty with Community EMS. The two were talking to victims in a car crash when a van came out of nowhere and clipped one of the crashed vehicles. The clipped car spun around like a baseball bat and hit Kotulak, sending him into two lanes of traffic.

Kotulak’s partner pulled him to safety and began treating him until another EMS team arrived.

Kotulak is in the ICU at Henry Ford Hospital. His critical injuries include, two broken vertebrae, two broken legs, six broken ribs, broken facial bones and a broken thumb.

Kotulak’s son says the driver of the gray van that hit his father stopped briefly, but then sped off.

The family is asking for help in finding the driver. As of right now they only know it was a gray van being driven by a female.
