LAURINBURGH, N.C. — A shooting at a North Carolina hospital may have stemmed from a nightclub brawl a few hours earlier involving the daughter of the alleged gunman, police said.

Wayne Simmons, 49, was arrested at Scotland Memorial Hospital in Laurinburg, N.C., minutes after he allegedly shot Domario Covington, 31, admitted to the hospital for injuries sustained in a fight at a club in nearby McColl, The Laurinburgh (N.C.) Exchange reported Monday.

Simmons allegedly shot Covington several times in the chest in Covington’s room, then turned the weapon on Covington’s girlfriend Jessica Gillespie and attempted to fire, but the weapon jammed, the Exchange said.

Covington was in critical but stable condition, hospital officials said.

Simmons has been charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and discharging a firearm into a medical facility, police said.

Police said the shooting may have resulted from the earlier brawl which allegedly involved the victim, his girlfriend, and Simmons’ daughter.
