ELGIN — Stephanie Starr was running late for work at Sherman Hospital last Friday as she drove east on Lawrence Avenue.
As she headed down the hill toward the intersection at State Street (Illinois 31), she muttered in frustration when she saw the crossing gates begin to drop at the train tracks between 31 and the Fox River at about 3 p.m.
She was on the phone with her firefighter husband when she noticed a minivan heading north on State suddenly turn east onto Kimball Street — and begin maneuvering around the gates as a Metra commuter train plowed through the crossing, striking the minivan and dragging the vehicle about 50 yards north of the intersection. ...
