FARMINGTON, NM — Four people were killed Tuesday in a two-car accident near mile marker 47 on U.S. 491 in the Sheepsprings Chapter, according to preliminary reports by the Navajo Emergency Medical Service.
A technician at the Tohatchi Field Office confirmed Tuesday evening that an emergency call came into the office at about 4:30 p.m. Three occupants of one vehicle were killed when it collided with another vehicle. The sole occupant of the other vehicle also was killed.
Emergency medical technicians, firefighters and Navajo police responded to the scene, the technician said.
The technician, who also said state police officers were dispatched to help with traffic control, declined to give her name.
The accident occurred just south of the Sheepsprings store.
The San Juan Communications Authority received a call from the Shiprock office of the Navajo Nation Department of Public Safety asking for back-up at 4:26 p.m. According to dispatch records, volunteers from the Newcomb Fire Station responded along with Navajo police and Air Care crews from the San Juan Regional Medical Center.
Hospital spokesman Dennis Mathis did not have information Tuesday evening about the accident or the Air Care efforts.
San Juan Fire Chief Larry Marcum did not have information about the accident, nor did Kimberlae Houk, spokeswoman for the Northern Navajo Medical Center.
Names of victims were not immediately released. No further information about the cause of the accident was available Tuesday.
Calls to the Shiprock and Window Rock, Ariz., offices of the Navajo Department of Public Safety were not returned Tuesday. The calls were placed after business hours.
