PALMDALE, Calif. — A swarm of bees caused 35 high school students to be transported to a hospital after someone threw an apple at a hive.

ABC7 reported that around 40 students were stung at Palmdale High School. Thirty-five of those stung were transported to the hospital, including one who was stung about 13 times.

Firefighters and seven ambulances arrived on the scene and a classroom was on lockdown while students ran for safety.

A beekeeper was called to diffuse the situation and said the attacking bees’ aggression was about an 8 on a scale of 0 to 10.

“This looks like your generic honeybee, but they have a very high aggressive tendency,” beekeeper Steven Melton said.
