NEW ALBANY, Ind. — Just after 6:30 PM on March 26, an Orange County EMS crew was taking a meal break at KFC in New Albany, IN when 43 year-old Larry Loughman of Jeffersonville jumped in an ambulance and headed north on Interstate 65.

A YouTube video taken by Eric Behrends shows police using stop sticks to try stop the stolen ambulance after an off duty officer spotted it in Clark County. Troopers caught up in Scott County and used the spikes in Jackson County, where a trooper fired his gun at the ambulance after it swerved to miss the sticks and struck a police cruiser. Stop sticks were deployed two more times, but the ambulance was not stopped until 46 miles after it was spotted.

Loughman was tazed after officers said he didn’t follow commands. He is in a Floyd County jail charged with auto theft. The chase covered four counties and police said additional charges will be pending in each jurisdiction.
