PITTSBURGH, Pa. — A Pittsburgh paramedic sport utility vehicle and a Pittsburgh police cruiser crashed on Saturday in the Strip District, closing a portion of Liberty Avenue for hours.

The police officer was responding as backup about 5:45 p.m. to help with crime-scene control at a fatal shooting in the Hill District.

The accident occurred at Liberty Avenue and 26th Street at the entrance to the busway. The SUV struck the passenger side of the police car. The police car caught fire for a short period of time, authorities said. The police car remained partially rolled on its side for hours.

Pittsburgh police Cmdr. Thomas Stangrecki said the police officer and two EMS supervisors were taken to a local hospital in stable condition. Occupants of the vehicles had to be pulled from the wreckage, authorities said.
