HARKER HEIGHTS, Texas — A man stole an ambulance, leading police on a chase Tuesday morning, until he crashed.
Taylor Patterson, 22, was arrested Tuesday after he attempted to steal a police squad car when officers responded to a report of an unresponsive man in a vehicle, reported KWTX.
“Due to the apparent intoxication of the individual” officers called paramedics to the scene before Patterson was taken into custody for public intoxication.
However, Patterson managed to slips out of his handcuffs and seat belt in the rear of the police car.
“He then defeated the locked prisoner screen and unsuccessfully attempted to obtain the vehicle shotgun from its locked rack, but managed to discharge the shotgun in the patrol car,” authorities said.
Patterson then escaped from the patrol car and stole the Harker Heights Fire Department ambulance; officers followed in pursuit.
During the chase, Patterson spoke with officers via radio calls and told them he was heavily armed and had been trained by the Army as a Special Forces soldier.
Patterson was arrested after losing control of the ambulance and crashing into a light pole.
