SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Mayor Bob Filner is seeking at least a one-year delay for the scheduled competitive bid of the city’s outsourced ambulance service while he explores options, including the possibility of San Diego taking the service in-house for the first time in decades.
The proposal comes nearly two years after the City Council approved a plan to seek bids on the contract following allegations of wrongdoing against the current provider — Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Rural/Metro. A subsequent investigation found no evidence of wrongdoing.
The current two-year deal with Rural/Metro expires June 30 and a request-for-proposals process has yet to be initiated. The council would have to approve an extension.
