DETROIT — An ambulance was stolen early Wednesday morning while paramedics were inside of a home, answering a call for help.

Police said that a 50-year-old man jumped in the ambulance that was parked on Manor Street on the city’s west side around 6:45 a.m. and sped away.

Police officers chased the ambulance and arrested the man inside after he crashed the truck into a yard, a few blocks away at Ward and Keeler streets.

“With the help of our GPS system in the vehicles we were able to track it and report to police where the vehicle was,” said Detroit Fire Commissioner James Mack.

The man was not seriously injured.

Police said the suspect may have had mental disabilities and will undergo a medical evaluation Wednesday.

It’s not known if the theft affected the paramedic’s care.

“We’re trying to render a service to the citizens and then a fool comes along and thinks its funny to take an ambulance, which can impact a person’s life,” said Mack.
