HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — A Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue truck and a car collided in a Hollywood intersection Thursday afternoon, forcing the truck to flip on its side, sheering the top of a fire hydrant off and sending six people to the hospital including three firefighters, according to police and fire officials.
The accident happened at about 3:30 p.m. at North 23rd Avenue and Raleigh Street.
According to Hollywood Police spokesman Anthony Gomez, a silver car was pulled over for a traffic spot and the driver took off.
“At this point it appears he ran a stop sign and made contact with the Fire Rescue truck,” he said.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said Thursday night the truck, Dania Beach-based Rescue 17, was en route to a call when the accident happened. All three firefighters on board were injured. No patients were on board.
Jachles said the accident also broke a hydrant, which flooded the area.
“There was a lot of damage,” he said.
Three people in the car, including a 4-year-old child, were also injured. Jachles said by Thursday evening one firefighter was released from the hospital and the two others were being kept overnight.
“We were very lucky that they weren’t more seriously injured given the extensive damage to the truck,” he said.
Gomez said police were investigating the crash, and charges could be pending.
