NUMIDIA, Pa. — An emergency medical technician with Mahanoy City EMS was seriously injured Monday afternoon when she jumped from a moving ambulance in Northumberland County while the vehicle was returning from a transport to Geisinger Medical Center.

Locust Twp. Police Chief Allen Breach said the incident happened around 1:15 p.m. in the 1400 block of Numidia Drive, Route 42.

Breach said the ambulance was traveling south when reports started to come to the communications center about a “body” hanging out from a side door.

The person referred to as a “body,” a female ambulance attendant, then apparently jumped out, he said.

Breach said at the time, the woman was riding in the back where there was no patient, instead of riding up front with her partner.

“It appears she was upset over a previous incident, opened the door and jumped out,” the chief said.

Breach said that after jumping out, the woman, who he said is not being identified pending notification of family members, was found lying on the side of the road.

Several emergency medical technicians began to render emergency care to the woman, who was then air-lifted to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, with what authorities are calling serious injuries.

Breach, who was at the scene of another emergency call Monday night, said additional information will be released at the conclusion of the investigation.
