STRONGSVILLE, Ohio — Newly released dashcam and security video shows the crash between an Ohio fire department ambulance and a police cruiser that injured three medics and one police officer earlier this month.
The Strongsville Police Department cruiser crashed into the Strongsville Fire & Emergency Services rig around 2 a.m. on Feb. 9, according to FOX 8. The EMS crew was responding to a medical emergency, and the police officer was headed to a separate call.
Both the rig and the police car had their lights activated at the time of the collision, but the police cruiser did not have its siren on, the officer told Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP). The officer told a trooper he estimated he was driving between “78 and 81” miles per hour before hitting the rig.
The medic who was driving the ambulance lost consciousness after the crash, and the front passenger managed to move it safely off the road, according to OSHP.
The current condition of the fire department medics has not been released. Strongsville Police Chief Mark Fender said the officer is recovering and hasn’t yet returned to work.
OSHP is investigating the crash and the police department is conducting an internal investigation.
