CAMBRIDGE, Ohio — An ambulance rolled over multiple times Saturday morning, killing a paramedic and patient.
The Daily Jeffersonian reported the Tri-State ambulance had four medical personnel and one patient on board when it went out of control on an interstate shortly after 2 a.m.
Paramedic supervisor Charles McMahan, 39, and other team members were transporting a critical patient from Wheeling, W.Va. to Columbus, Ohio. As they were crossing a bridge, they encountered black ice and the ambulance lost control and left the roadway. The ambulance rolled multiple times before coming to a rest.
McMahan became certified as an EMT in 2007, became a paramedic in 2008 and started working for Tri-State Ambulance in 2013. He accepted the position of division manager a month ago.
“He was very excited to take this new leadership role with us and was excelling well beyond expectations,” Tri-State Ambulance wrote in a Facebook post. “His strong hand, kind demeanor, talent, skills and smile will be missed by us all.”
The patient, Dennis Calvert, 64, also died in the crash.
Officials said icy road conditions were a factor in the crash.
