KENT COUNTY, Mich. — A 29-year-old woman has been charged with operating while intoxicated after an early Sunday morning crash that left an ambulance driver pinned inside his vehicle, according to the Kent County Prosecutor’s Office.
The woman awaits arraignment in 63rd District Court, Prosecutor Chris Becker said.
The crash happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday, July 28, on Fulton Street near Spaulding Avenue in Ada Township, according to Michigan State Police.
A Rockford ambulance was eastbound on Fulton when the vehicle was sideswiped by a Ford sedan, police said. The ambulance driver was pinned in the vehicle as a result of the crash and extricated by first responders.
The driver of the car is now being charged with operating while intoxicated causing serious injury and second-offense operating while intoxicated, Becker said.
The woman was previously charged with operating while impaired in the first offense in an April 2016 case. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 months’ probation.
Police said the paramedic was taken to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital to seek treatment for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The passenger of the ambulance was taken to Mercy Health Saint Mary’s Hospital by ambulance to seek treatment for minor injuries, police said.
Fulton Street was shut down for about an hour at Spaulding Avenue as authorities cleared the scene.
