STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A total of five people were injured, including one critically, when an ambulance overturned while responding to a pedestrian crash in Westerleigh Friday morning, according to authorities.
The ambulance was transporting the critically-injured pedestrian when the rescue vehicle collided with an SUV at Jewett and Maine avenues around 6:30 a.m., according to preliminary information from the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information.
A total of three EMS workers are expected to recover from their serious injuries at Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton, according to FDNY and NYPD sources.
The pedestrian was transported in critical condition to Richmond University Medical Center.
The driver of a Jeep that collided with the ambulance suffered serious injuries that are not considered life-threatening and was taken to Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze, according to FDNY and NYPD sources.
The first crash involving the pedestrian was reported just before 6:15 a.m. in the vicinity of Jewett Avenue and Keiber Court and The Boulevard. A 34-year-old woman was crossing in the middle of the street when she was struck by a Dodge Charger traveling on Jewett Avenue, the police spokeswoman said.
The Dodge remained at the scene.
The ambulance responded to the pedestrian crash and was traveling on Maine en route to the hospital when the emergency vehicle collided with the Jeep traveling on Jewett Avenue toward Maine, the police spokeswoman said.
The ambulance flipped on its side and the front end of the Jeep SUV was badly damaged and crushed against the underside of the ambulance.
Jewett Avenue was closed from College Avenue to The Boulevard during the response.
