BOURNE, Mass. — Two firefighters in a Bourne ambulance and a driver in another vehicle were injured in a crash on the Scenic Highway on Thursday.

The two-vehicle crash occurred at around 4 p.m. near Edgehill Road and temporarily closed the highway, according to a statement from the Bourne Fire Department.

The ambulance crew was returning to the station after a call, the statement says. After the crash, the two firefighter-paramedics inspected the vehicles and began treatment for the other driver, who was the sole occupant of the second vehicle, according to the statement.

The firefighters were taken to Tobey Hospital in Wareham for evaluation and the driver of the other vehicle was taken to Falmouth Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, the statement says.

The ambulance will likely be a total loss, Bourne Deputy Fire Chief David Pelonzi said. The department typically has three ambulances in service and a fourth in reserve, Pelonzi said, but now the fourth will go into the regular rotation.

The crash is under investigation by the Bourne Police Department.
