AURORA, Ill. — At least 11 people were taken to area hospitals Wednesday afternoon after a minivan and an Aurora Fire Department ambulance collided at Galena Boulevard and West Street, according to Aurora police.
Aurora police said the ambulance, which had a patient inside, had its lights and sirens activated and was heading west on Galena. It T-boned the minivan, which was traveling south on West, police said.
The minivan was being driven by a man, police said. Others in the vehicle included a 27-year-old female passenger, 1-year-old twin boys, and other children 4, 6, 12 and 13 years old. At least some are related, police said.
One of the 1-year-old boys and the 12-year-old are being transferred to a Chicago hospital for serious head wounds, according to police.
The two Aurora Fire Department paramedics and the patient in the ambulance were treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The intersection and several side streets were shut down after the accident at 4:10 p.m., and police estimated the closures would last about four hours.
