Danette Purvis performed CPR on her colleague while others ran to grab an AED

WASHINGTON — Performing CPR can save a life — if you know how.

Earlier this month, Danette Purvis attended a CPR training course with the city’s Hands on Hearts CPR program. The next day, Purvis witnessed her colleague, Kenneth Miles, go into cardiac arrest. She recognized the signs and began to perform CPR, reported CBS News.

“All of a sudden everything just stopped, his breathing, his movement,” Purvis said. “I pulled his arm, pulled him on the floor. I straightened his body out just a little bit, real quick, and I started chest compressions immediately.”

Other colleagues grabbed an AED and provided aid until emergency crews arrived. Miles was transported to the hospital, where he is recovering.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and D.C. Fire and EMS Chief Gregory Dean thanked those involved for their efforts in a ceremony this week.
