AKRON, Ohio — The mother of a 1-year-old boy who overdosed on an opioid was arrested Friday on unrelated charges, Akron police said.

Emergency crews revived the child with Narcan, an opioid overdose antidote, after he overdosed Thursday at a home on Gale Street, police said.

The boy’s mother ran away from the home following the overdose, police said. She was later arrested on an unrelated warrant out of Portage County.

The mother, who has not been charged in connection with the child’s overdose, remains in custody at the Portage County Jail, police said

Akron police did not identify the woman in the news release.

The boy’s 9-year-old sibling called police on Thursday and told dispatchers he was not breathing.

Paramedics arrived about 6:30 p.m. and administered Narcan before taking the boy to Akron Children’s Hospital to be treated. Hospital staff were able to revive the boy after providing additional doses of the drug, police said.

Summit County Children Services took custody of the boy and his two siblings.

The overdose is still under investigation.

This is at least the third time a child has overdosed on opioids in Akron in the last few months.

On March 6, a 2-year-old overdosed on a synthetic opiate. About a week later on March 14, a 6-year-old became dizzy and appeared to have a seizure while she was in the shower. Police have said it appears the girl likely overdosed.

Both children survived.
