SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Multiple people called Onondaga County 911 late Wednesday night to report the deadly accident that involved Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim and claimed the life of a 51-year-old Syracuse man.
“Multiple callers reporting two vehicles involved,” according to the dispatcher on the call. “Said one sedan hit the guard rail and is now sideways in the roadway.”
Emergency crews were called to Interstate 690 Eastbound near Thompson Road at 11:22 p.m., according to Syracuse police. The 911 dispatcher told crews the accident was on the service road.
Callers reported “somebody laying in the ditch” and then a “possible full arrest at the scene,” according to the dispatcher.
Syracuse police said a vehicle lost control on the highway, striking a guard rail. People in the car got out and proceeded to walk on the highway near the vehicle, police said.
Boeheim, 74, of DeWitt, noticed the disabled car and tried avoiding the vehicle, which was in the road. Boeheim’s vehicle struck the man who was standing on the side of the road, police said.
The man hit was identified as Jorge Jimenez, 51, of Syracuse. Jimenez was transported to Upstate University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Both drivers remained on scene and cooperated with this investigation. Field sobriety and alco-sensor tests for both drivers were negative for any signs of impairment, police said. Reconstruction of the scene will be performed; speeds cannot be determined at this time, police said. No uniformed traffic tickets have been issued at this time, police said.
