KEANSBURG, N.J. — A groundbreaking was held for the country’s first ever 9/11 EMS memorial.

News12 reported that the New Jersey memorial, which is being built by the New Jersey State First Aid Council will be dedicated to the EMS providers who responded to the attacks on Sept. 11. Around 400 ambulances from the state responded to the attacks, according to the council.

The memorial will be centralized around a piece of steel from the World Trade Center that fell during the attacks. It is about 5 feet long and weighs 340 pounds.

Officials are aiming to have the memorial completed by Sept. 11, 2018. The monument will be placed right next to the already-existing 9/11 memorial.
