Protect yourself against the coming flu season

Contributed by: EMS1 Staff

With the flu season fast approaching, it is important for EMS personnel to receive their annual vaccination before the risk of infection goes into full swing.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Web site, the ideal time to receive an Influenza vaccination, or “flu shot,” is in October and November. Reports of the flu are highest in the winter months, but can last as long as May.

The CDC advises paramedics, EMTs and all other medical and healthcare workers to receive the vaccination every year to combat the chances of contracting a strain of influenza.

With the shortage of EMS personnel across the nation, it is crucial for paramedics and EMTs to remain fit and healthy throughout the winter season.

Many Fire/EMS departments will cover the cost of flu shots for their employees, so be sure to check with your manager or captain.
