Crash kills Ind. paramedic on way to shift

WAYNE TOWNSHIP, Ind. — 33-year-old Vania Shields had been a paramedic for several years and joined the Wayne Township Fire Department last May. She was on her way to work when the fatal crash occurred on I-65 Thursday morning.

Wayne Township Fire Department spokesman Captain Troy Wymer says she was an excellent paramedic and was very well liked by her co-workers. The irony is that over the years, she had responded to many fatal accidents, only to become a victim herself.

Shields’ husband is a firefighter, who was working his last shift with the Shelbyville Fire Department before joining the Bargersville Fire Department.
