More than 20 students hurt in Ala. school bus wreck

Bus had more than 40 students headed toward elementary, high schools; back tire of bus may have left road before it overturned

The Associated Press

GOSHEN, Ala. — More than 20 students were taken to hospitals Friday morning after a school bus overturned in southeast Alabama.

Pike County Schools Superintendent Mark Bazzell tells the Troy Messenger (http://bit.ly/zfdfQ7) none of the injuries appears to be life-threatening.

Bazzell said the wreck happened around 7:15 a.m. on a county road. Bazzell said the bus had more than 40 students of all ages headed toward Goshen's elementary and high schools.

He said 21 students were taken by ambulance to hospitals in Luverne and Troy. Other students were also being checked out at hospitals.

Pike County Sheriff Russell Thomas said "there were bad conditions. The rain was terrible."

No official cause of the wreck was released, although some reports said a back tire of the bus left the road before the vehicle overturned.
