The dramatic buzz and whir of a helicopter lowering to the scene of an accident is an emblem of modern emergency medicine.

So strongly does UW Health identify with the image that marketers chose a scene of a patient being transported from a helicopter for the cover of its latest annual report. But do helicopter emergency medical services mean better outcomes for patients? ... Full Story

Perception is Reality, Even When it's Not
When it comes to those outside EMS, people only see – and thus draw conclusions from — the EMS providers they come in contact or the representation of providers by the media.

The impact of disturbing headlines and even more disturbing stories is not the presumption that one bad apple spoils the whole bunch, but the collateral harm that exists between perception and reality ... Full Column

Now is the time for EMS providers to implement an educational program in their local community. An educated and informed lay person can greatly improve survival before an ambulance even arrives ... Comment of the Week

Some of the comments I've seen demonstrate a fundamental lack of understanding of other medical professions. For example, nurses are just that, nurses. They are not EMTs who can just do whatever their training suggests, whenever. Many facilities I deal with require nurses to contact a doctor first before ANY intervention is attempted.

Stryker EMS introduced a new footrest for the Stair-PRO Stair Chair. The new footrest supports the patient's feet and can be ordered as an option with new stair chairs, or is easily retrofitted to Stair-PRO models already in service. For more information, contact your local Stryker EMS Territory Manager.

EMS1 Forums Post of the Week
"I personally think that all rescue personnel should attend a basic survival class. Nothing fancy, just a few essential survival skills should they end up in a bad, stranded place. And for you city crews, you all need it too! Never know when and where you may respond to a disaster or major incident."
