Washington, D.C. Fire and EMS, in its continuing efforts to put lipstick on a pig, is integrating civilian medics into their department to form a new ''integrated, all-hazards agency.''

Obviously, the relationship between fire suppression and EMS is dysfunctional. Everyone except the proponents of dual-role systems realizes it. The question is, can the relationship be mended? ... Full Column

Practice 12-Lead ECG #2
The P waves are hard to find, but they are there. Look at leads I and II. Use a magnifying glass if you have to. You will notice that they are wide-exactly 0.12 seconds-and notched, with the notches 0.04 seconds or more apart. This is an example of P-mitrale. ... Full Case

Comment of the Week

I absolutely agree that EMTs and medics don't make enough, that’s why I retired and moved on to other work. However in the situation portrayed in the article, the issue was not about what AMR could afford to pay, nor was it about what NEMSA could extract from AMR. It was about a militant portion of the workforce using NEMSA as a tool to try to get what they felt they 'deserved.'

EMS1 Forums Post of the Week
"Personal opinion has many variables. Since many paramedic students have no other higher academic experience or prior medical experience, it is hard for them to actually say whether one program is better than another. It is all relative. Some may think if they were spoon fed the answers to the tests that makes a great program. If the clinicals were easy by being conducted primarily around the coffee pot or the station's TV, that too can be a great program for some."
