An investigation found that at least two people in Texas have died and another has become permanently disabled after being deprived of oxygen during Rapid Sequence Intubation.

The incidents, detailed in court records stemming from lawsuits filed by the patients' families, show the harrowing downside of the procedure, which requires endotracheal intubation, a difficult skill under any circumstance ... Full Story

Stryker EMS introduced a new footrest for the Stair-PRO Stair Chair. The new footrest supports the patient's feet and can be ordered as an option with new stair chairs, or is easily retrofitted to Stair-PRO models already in service. It All Makes Sense
The Valsalva Maneuver
EMS crews often discuss the call where a patient is found on the toilet after suffering a syncopal episode while having a bowel movement. Interestingly, the act of defecation often involves involuntary use of the Valsalva during evacuation of the colon.

A hemodynamically stable patient who presents in a regular narrow-complex tachycardia with a ventricular rate greater than 150 bpm may be instructed by the EMS crew to perform a Valsalva maneuver ... Full Column

EMS1 Forums Post of the Week
"In my home state of VT, the majority of fire and EMS worked on VHF high with usually one repeater. This gave most departments good to great coverage. Our police departments were usually on UHF and normally had very poor coverage, even with a repeater or two. Here in PA fire and EMS are on VHF low freq which works okay in the rural areas, but not so hot in the city. The portables are so large that no one carries them (at least in EMS)."
