Audit: Death benefits for first responders improperly denied
First responders who died of heart attacks and strokes while on the job were improperly denied survivors' death benefits after the Justice Department decided they weren't responding to emergencies, a new audit shows.

Additionally, payments to families of hundreds of fallen public safety officers were delayed for years due to foot-dragging at the department's Office of Justice Programs, the audit found ... Full Story

Comment of the Week

Any chance that we can make this required reading for those who write protocols? Pennsylvania went from each county/region having its own protocols to state-wide protocols. The chaotic variation from county to county is gone. The new protocols are a ceiling for the vertically challenged. The protocols appear to be designed to drive medics out of EMS.

EMS1 Forums Post of the Week
"I do not drive 'red', 'code 3,' 'hot' or whatever you call it, often. However I will do it. My normal decision is based on, "Can I manage this patient without adverse conditions developing?" And after many years (more than 20), I have not had a problem with this approach. For those who do not run priority under any circumstances, just be willing to defend your position in court if you failed to get a patient to a stroke center, or cardiac cath lab, when something could have been done to have a better outcome. You could find yourself on the short end of a negligence suit."
