By Mike Touchstone, EMS1.com Columnist |

During my years in EMS, I've witnessed significant weaknesses in two critically important developmental areas. First, we are generally trained and certified, rather than educated and licensed. | EMS1 Forums Post of the Week |
"A few years ago, I was attending EMS Expo in Atlanta and was flying home on a flight. I was sitting across from an elderly, black woman who experienced an acute onset of chest pressure, mild dyspnea, and lightheadedness. I stepped forward and was the only volunteer who agreed to help. I conducted an assessment, PE, VS, and placed her on O2. There was a medical kit with an AED and medications with a control tag. I was informed by the flight attendant they needed to obtain permission to use it. I asked for permission to treat her for ACS. I was denied …Why are the kits on the aircraft if no one can use them? I was less than impressed and will have second thoughts about intervening again."
