Dallas Fire-Rescue officials say a five-minute delay between the time that fire dispatchers learned a motorcycle officer had crashed and paramedics were first told to go to the scene occurred because they were having trouble getting a good address.

Officials said they needed an exact address so the city's new automated dispatch system could tell them which of their emergency workers could respond ... Full Story

Prehospital Professional Development
Applications of the Taxonomies of Learning Objectives (Part 2)
During my years in EMS, I've witnessed significant weaknesses in two critically important developmental areas. First, we are generally trained and certified, rather than educated and licensed. And second, we do very little to prepare new instructors, supervisors and leaders to succeed in their roles. In short, there is a lack of planned professional development ... Full Column

''I never could understand why registered nurses and licensed practical nurses call 911 for bullcrap nursing home scenarios. Those nurses have training, skills, schooling, licenses, etc., and should use them and/or call the patient's doctor for orders. I know a lot of times they like to send the patient out so they can get a break from them during their shifts.''

EMS1 Forums Post of the Week
"A few years ago, I was attending EMS Expo in Atlanta and was flying home on a flight. I was sitting across from an elderly, black woman who experienced an acute onset of chest pressure, mild dyspnea, and lightheadedness. I stepped forward and was the only volunteer who agreed to help. I conducted an assessment, PE, VS, and placed her on O2. There was a medical kit with an AED and medications with a control tag. I was informed by the flight attendant they needed to obtain permission to use it. I asked for permission to treat her for ACS. I was denied …Why are the kits on the aircraft if no one can use them? I was less than impressed and will have second thoughts about intervening again."
