A massive search-and-rescue effort was launched by local responders after the helicopter crashed Tuesday night during a 30-mile trip to pick up a patient. The helicopter had just aborted its trip due to bad weather when it went down, so there was no patient aboard ... Full Story

Accidental Hypothermia
Ever shiver from the cold? At that moment, you were hypothermic. Your body temperature dropped below normal and triggered a heat generating response from the brain commanding the muscles to twitch.

Face it — you are a homeotherm. And that’s a good thing; it means you are warm-blooded and capable of maintaining a relatively constant internal temperature ... Full Column

Things I Wish I Hadn't Said
One of the many skills an EMS manager must master is the ability to speak in front of people. I always felt I was pretty good at it, but naturally there were times I regretted some of the things I’ve said.

"EMT salaries will remain low because EMTs are a dime a dozen."

I boldly delivered this line 15 years ago ... Full Column

Comment of the Week

''I don't work in a department yet, I am currently an EMT in paramedic school. This article really puts things into perspective. I feel we sometimes tend to forget about our own safety in the midst of trying to provide the utmost medical care to our patients. We sometimes need to take a deep breath and see the whole picture for what it is and not just what we want it to be.''

EMS1 Forums Post of the Week
"Two weeks ago my partner and I trained, ran multiple calls all day, and then were sent out on an out-of-county run at 1700 hours. This trip is in excess of 500 miles one-way. We were expected to get there ASAP and return just as fast. The problem with this is we were exhausted. The boss’s response was LOOK FOR WORK ELSEWHERE. We did as told, but if bosses what to know how to avoid accidents like this or others, they need to remember where they came from."
