The Ambulance Driver's Perspective
How Much Is Enough Experience?
"So, I’m trying to figure out where I go from here. Do I get my EMT-Intermediate, or do I go straight into paramedic school?"

Between colleagues, former students and various posters on EMS internet forums, it seems I’m asked that question several times a week. Every green EMT (and plenty of ripe ones) wants to know when he’ll be ready for the big, bad marathon of paramedic training ... Full Column

The Legal Guardian
Hiding in Plain Sight: Part 1
EMS seems to be the one of the few endeavors where employees place their careers on the line every day due to the threat of a lawsuit.

Many providers mistakenly believe that liability risks, though significant, are limited only to actual emergency response activity. In reality, legal exposure for EMS professionals exists while on your way to, on the scene of, and coming away from every call ... Full Column

''I guess I am surprised to think that someone on-call would choose to drink knowing the possibility of being paged out. I don't want the pilot of the next plane I take to tip a few before flying it, so why would I want someone who is going to help me with an emergency to have a few?''

EMS1 Forums Post of the Week
"Very seldom do we run L & S. In fact, the last time we ran emergent traffic to the hospital, it was for a GSW to the abdomen. It seems we (I) tend to run emergent more for trauma calls as opposed to medical. The need to run emergent traffic for cardiac arrest pt's is a moot one, as we don't transport deceased pt's. I will admit as a new paramedic I feel the need to run emergent a little more often but have been able to refrain from doing so, so far."
