Just because you're in the hospital doesn't mean you'll quickly get treated if your heart stops beating. About one-third of patients don't get a defibrillation shock within the recommended two minutes, a new study found.

"I've been a supervisor and paramedic in a system that allowed RSI, and we had a 98% first-time successful intubation rate using it. Our protocol was essentially versed or etomidate, followed by succinylcloline. In the few misses we had, combitubes were successfully placed after two missed attempts. It's a very valuable tool in the hands of trained professionals. It's the boneheads and cowboys that give it a bad name in the prehospital realm."
