A mutated version of a common cold virus has caused 10 deaths in the last 18 months, U.S. health officials said Thursday.

"I think one of the main problems, other than low pay in many areas, is that we lie to our students about the job starting with EMT school. We spend so much time talking about our 'saves' and thrilling rescues that we don't prepare our new personnel for the reality of the streets, i.e. routine transports, the homeless, persons with no insurance using you as a cab ride, etc.

This can be a rewarding career, but too often we attract the trauma junkies who can't deal with the public health part."
