The ambulance transporting the only runner who died in the Chicago Marathon earlier this month got lost on the way to the hospital, had to flag down another ambulance to get directions and then ended up at the wrong emergency room, authorities said Tuesday. "Why — even with all the protocols in place, new technology to monitor with, and the availability of hospital stroke teams and chest pain centers — are lights and sirens (Code 3) still being used for almost every "priority patient" going to the hospital?

This is true especially for cardiac arrest patients. Why L/S for patients still in cardiac arrest? Paramedics have argued and are correct that in many situations in the field, they are doing everything that can be done initially for the patient. So why are they still in such a hurry to get to the ER?"
