NEW HAVEN, Conn. — New Haven authorities say a city firefighter jumped out of a moving ambulance when he saw his estranged wife with her divorce lawyer on the street and started a confrontation that led to his arrest.

The New Haven Register reports that Matt Kennedy was on duty when he jumped out of the fire department ambulance and assaulted his wife's attorney Friday night in the city's entertainment district. The divorce is pending in court.

Kennedy was charged with violating a protective or restraining order that his wife had against him. Fire Chief Michael Grant placed him on administrative leave.

Grant says Kennedy has a court appearance on Monday. The chief calls the incident disappointing and embarrassing.

The lawyer, Tony Wallace, did not return messages.
