GASTONIA, N.C. — Nine people were taken to the hospital after a crash involving six vehicles, including an ambulance with a patient onboard, in Gastonia on Wednesday afternoon.

Police said an elderly man with a medical condition lost control on Cox Road near Interstate 85. He hit the ambulance, then continued down the road and struck another sedan and an emergency transport unit. The sedan hit a truck and that truck hit another car.

Of the nine people taken to the hospital, two were taken in emergency traffic.
