American Heart Associaton Releases Definition of Myocardial Infarction

The American Heart Association has released the official universal definition of myocardial infarction in its Circulation magazine, published in October.

According to the association, myocardial infarction should be used when there is evidence of myocardial necrosis in a clinical setting consistent with myocardial ischaemia. Some of the criteria include: detection of rise and/or fall of cardiac biomarkers, sudden and unexpected cardiac death, percutaneous coronary interventions, among others.
