Duty Death: G. Marshall Sanford - [Redding, Connecticut]

REDDING, Conn. — A Connecticut firefighter-EMT died of a medical issue Sunday while responding to a brush fire.

Lt. G. Marshall Sanford, 67, vice president of Redding Volunteer Fire & EMS Company No. 1 in Conn., collapsed as he was hauling equipment to the scene, according to the News-Times.

Lt. Sanford was a former fire chief and a 50-year veteran of the fire service who came from a family tradition of firefighting. His father was a fire chief, and his mother was a volunteer driver for the fire department during World War II, the News-Times said. Even his brother was a fire commissioner.

"We deeply respect his work protecting the community, and we stand with the many residents and firefighters who are grieving his loss," said a statement from Gov. Dannel Malloy's office. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to 1st Lieutenant Sanford's family and friends at this terrible time."
